“Mythos”, much like all the other songs from this collection was born out of a lamentable acceptance that our ability to live truly free and prosperous lives as a whole, is slowly but surely being taken away from us and that much of what we have come to understand as “freedom” is mostly an illusion. 

Right around the same time, a friend of mine played me a collection of prison work songs that completely resonated with the above sentiments. You know, those old Lomax brothers field recordings of the chain gangs singing work songs and spirituals and just about anything they could to take their minds off their hellish lives. Well, I think I must have somehow channeled that straight into this song when it appeared or maybe the song channeled it straight into me. Ah the mysteries of a song…It’s definitely an odd one for this band, as it’s our first to have no lyrics, yet somehow feels to me like it conveys something that perhaps words could not. 

I distinctly remember the recording session for this one being a lot of fun.  We had some friends hanging out in the studio so once the main tracks were recorded, we dug out the big box of shaky, tappy, whirly things and let everybody have at it. 

The song came about back in 2018 or so but didn’t get a proper title until just this year. On a band trip to Greece of all places, there was a popular local beer called Mythos. It was everywhere and while drinking our fair share of it one day, someone threw it out there for the title, which we all immediately liked. In Greek, the word refers to an account, a story, or a tale, which is just perfect because I think about all the things that we’ve been told a lot and I just can’t help but wonder how this whole crazy thing might end.

“High Time” is the second release from the collection of songs recorded back in 2019. Six songs from those sessions are making their way into the world this year, each one carrying a piece of where we were then - and a little something about where we are now. Songs seem to know when it’s their time.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it is our great pleasure to present to you…a song! Now, I know what you’re thinking…”This can’t be true, can it?” “This band routinely waits six, seven, even eight years between releases and they just released a single a couple years ago!” (“The Shine On Single” on 7” vinyl via @littlecloudrecords and on all the digi platforms if you missed it). Well friends, it’s the truth. It’s the “Love, Light, Beauty & Truth” to be exact and It’s the first of a handful of songs that we’ll be releasing on the 15th of every month through the end of the year, from a collection of material that was recorded in the spring of 2019. We figured we’d better tide ya’ll over for a spell while we finish mixing this Shangri-La record. Hope ya like it!

   Steeped in the aura of the perennially mythologized psychedelic culture of Southern California, The Stevenson Ranch Davidians has, since 2006, revealed itself in shifting configurations; making music influenced by the timeless essence of ‘60s psych, folk and soul, woven with strands of early American roots music. While the lineup has continually coalesced around lead singer and songwriter Dwayne Seagraves, the collective has always had a guiding vision and goal: to create music that seeks to simultaneously demystify and deify the human experience. 

     The other members bring a range of talent, experience and inspiration to The Stevenson Ranch Davidians’ sound. In addition to founding member and Davidians’ bassist, Jessica Latiolait, the band includes producer and long time Brian Jonestown Massacre member Rob Campanella on guitar and lap steel. On drums is Misha Bullock, the sole Englishman in the fold and composer by day. The newest edition to the collective is Sara Minsavage on keyboards, shakes and jangles.

     After releasing their third LP, Amerikana, in 2017 the band embarked on two extensive European tours in 2018 and 2019 while also recording what will be their fourth full length collection of songs. In early 2020 the band began a monthly residency in the Bay Area until being forced into an indefinite hiatus due to various governmental mandates during the Covid outbreak.

     In the summer of 2023 the band reemerged to work on the finishing touches of their latest recordings with plans to jump back into the live music circuit and release a record in 2024.
